How are peptide doses calculated for dogs?+
Most peptide doses in this field are expressed per kilogram of body weight, so the calculation is the published per-kg range multiplied by your dog's weight. Some protocols instead use body surface area scaling, which applies a species-specific Km constant — 20 for dogs — to account for the fact that metabolic rate does not scale linearly with mass. This calculator uses the per-kg figures as they appear in the source literature.
Is this calculator a dosing recommendation?+
No. It reproduces figures reported in published literature, calculated against the weight you enter. It cannot account for your dog's condition, organ function, concurrent medication, or breed-specific genetic risk — all of which change the appropriate dose or rule a compound out entirely. The dose for an individual dog must be set by a veterinarian who has examined the animal.
Should I weigh my dog or use a breed average?+
Weigh your dog. Individual dogs vary substantially within a breed, and because dosing is per kilogram, an estimate that is out by a few kilograms produces a proportionally wrong dose. This matters most in small dogs, where a two-kilogram error can be a third of the total body weight.
How do I turn a dose into the amount I draw up?+
Divide the dose by the concentration of your reconstituted vial. The calculator above does this for the injectable compounds — enter the vial content in milligrams and the volume of bacteriostatic water you added, and it returns both the volume in millilitres and the equivalent mark on a U-100 insulin syringe, where 100 units is 1 mL. It also flags the two situations that cause most measurement errors: a volume too small to read reliably against the syringe gradations, and one larger than a standard insulin syringe holds.
What is the Km factor and do I need it?+
The Km factor is a species constant used in body surface area dose conversion — 20 for dogs, 12 for cats, 36.2 for horses. It is used when translating a dose from one species to another, which is how much of the canine dosing in this field was originally derived from rodent and human data. You do not need it to use this calculator; it is relevant when reading source papers that report doses in mg/m² rather than mg/kg.
