The short answer

Peptides are short amino acid chains investigated in dogs for tissue repair, immune modulation, and muscle maintenance. None are FDA-approved for these purposes in dogs — all such use is off-label or investigational and legally requires veterinary supervision. The evidence base is uneven: BPC-157 has published canine pharmacokinetic and safety data, GHK-Cu has a canine wound-healing study, while compounds like PNC-27 and MGF have no companion animal data at all. Several compounds carry serious contraindications — TB-500, IGF-1 LR3 and MGF should not be used in dogs with cancer, and ivermectin can be fatal in dogs carrying the MDR1 gene mutation without prior genetic testing.

Some published data supports this use, but the evidence may be limited to a single species, a single study, preclinical models, or extrapolation from human and rodent data. Promising but incomplete.

Preliminary / in vitro only

Evidence is limited to cell culture, rodent models, or mechanistic reasoning. No companion animal data exists. Included for completeness of the research landscape, not as an endorsement.

What are peptides and why are they used in dogs?+

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — smaller than proteins — that act as signalling molecules in the body. The compounds discussed in a canine context are mostly investigated for tissue repair, immune modulation, or muscle maintenance. None of them are FDA-approved for these uses in dogs; all such use is off-label or investigational and requires veterinary supervision.

Are peptides safe for dogs?+

Safety varies enormously by compound and cannot be generalised. BPC-157 has a preclinical safety evaluation finding no lethal dose in dogs. Ivermectin can be fatal in dogs carrying the MDR1 gene mutation. TB-500, IGF-1 LR3 and MGF are contraindicated in dogs with cancer. Which peptide has the most evidence in dogs specifically?+

BPC-157 has the only published canine pharmacokinetic study, conducted in beagles, alongside a dedicated preclinical safety evaluation. GHK-Cu has a veterinary surgical study on topical application to ischaemic open wounds in dogs. Ivermectin has an in vitro study using canine mammary tumour cells. Most other compounds rely on rodent, equine, or human data extrapolated to dogs.

Do I need a veterinarian to use peptides for my dog?+

Yes. In the United States, extralabel drug use in animals requires a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship and the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian under AMDUCA. Beyond the legal position, several compounds covered here require pre-treatment screening — an MDR1 genetic test before ivermectin, cancer screening before TB-500 or IGF-1 LR3, liver values before injectable GHK-Cu — that needs a veterinarian to order and interpret.

Emerging evidence means some published data supports the use but it may rest on a single study or extrapolation from other species.
